Abstract	The architecture of software systems is an increasingly important issue in the domain of electronic business due to its inherently networked and rapidly changing nature. Architectural choices often have been dominated by implementation concerns without much consideration given to the model of cooperation. A separation of the model of cooperation and the underlying implementation will be essential for the next generation of electronic business systems. In this paper we characterize different cooperation models which can be identified early during design and a set of quality of service (QoS) parameters and their relationship to them. The cooperation models help to identify basic and time-invariant structures and the discussion of QoS parameters guides the development of infrastructure support for these cooperations. We conclude that the event based cooperation model suits the requirements of new electronic business platforms. It offers the highest degree of flexibility and the whole range of Quality-of-Service semantics can be provided.
