With open source operating systems anyone can adapt the operating system to meet his or her specific needs. Additionally, it is relatively easy to implement and test new ideas. This project will focus on the design and relations of different components within an operating system and helpful tools to simplify OS development.
The concrete topics in this project will be based on current research. The following areas are of interest (non-exhaustive):
- energy management
- real time
- memory management
Possible platforms are different x86/x86_64 architectures as well as embedded ARM systems running various operating systems (Linux, L4, Barrelfish, *BSD, BSPrakOS, ...).
- Successful teamwork
- Self-organization within the project (role assignment, mile stones, interfaces, ...)
- Good programming knowledge (ideally C or C++)
- Being interested in low level programming
- Basic knowledge in computer architecture and operating system concepts
